As soon as the first crisp breeze hits, it’s as if pumpkins everywhere start their annual takeover. From lattes to pancakes, pumpkin spice has become the quintessential flavor of fall. But what exactly is in this magical spice mix, and how can you make your favorite seasonal latte at home?

What’s in Pumpkin Spice?

Pumpkin spice is a blend of warm, aromatic spices that evoke the essence of autumn. Despite its name, it doesn’t actually contain pumpkin; rather, it’s a mix of spices commonly used in pumpkin pie. Here’s what you’ll typically find in pumpkin spice:

Cinnamon: The star of the show, cinnamon adds a sweet and woody flavor.
Nutmeg: Nutmeg brings a hint of warmth and a slightly nutty, sweet taste.
Ginger: This spice adds a zesty kick and a touch of heat.
Cloves: With their intense, pungent flavor, cloves add depth and complexity to the mix.

While you can make the blend according to your own preferences, a classic pumpkin spice blend usually includes cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg in the following ratio:

4 parts cinnamon
2 parts ginger
1 part cloves
1 part nutmeg

This gives the warm, spicy flavor that defines pumpkin spice. For example, if need a tablespoon of pumpkin spice you’d mix:

2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Again, feel free to adjust the ratios to your preference, depending on which spice you want to stand out more.

Or, if you want to get creative, try adding allspice and/or cardamom into the mix.

Uses

There is a reason why pumpkin spice is the quintessential flavor of fall. It’s incredibly versatile! You can find it flavoring baked goods, oatmeal, smoothies, and even savory dishes such as roasted vegetables and soups. But perhaps the most beloved use is in coffee.

If you’re a fan of pumpkin spice lattes from your favorite coffee shop but want to be able to make it at home, this recipe is for you. It’s simple to make and perfect for enjoying a fall morning.
