The Women are Crushing It!

When it comes to healthy longevity, the women are crushing it! Ruth Sweedler, 103, has her big sister Shirley Hodes, 106, showing her the way when it comes to healthy longevity. When Francis Kompus turned 100, she celebrated with her two older sisters – Julia Kopriva, 104, and Lucy Pochop, 102. And these are just some of the siblings out of the almost 90,000 centenarians in the U.S. as of 2021.

The Numbers

Does “crushing it” seem like strong language? According to the New England Centenarian Study, 85% of the centenarians are women and 15% are men. When it comes to supercentenarians, those aged 110 years and older, the number of women increases to about 90%. 

Men, we want you to crush it, too! Start taking care of that amazing body of yours! You can start by looking to the the ladies for some wisdom. 


When it comes to Ruth and Shirley, these women are crushing it particularly regarding their mental sharpness. Ruth prides herself on being a good conversationalist. Her friends and family say she has impressive recall – regardless of her age! Neither she nor her sister think, or feel, like an “old lady!” They’re always excited to learn new things. 

While they both consider themselves blessed – and lucky – they’re also doing some very specific things to keep living at 100% for beyond 100 years. They are happy to offer advice. First, “If you’re lucky enough to have work you enjoy, embrace it.” It’s satisfying “to make full use of your talents. Second, have good relationships. There’s nothing better than to love and be loved. Third, stay open minded and continue to learn. Lastly, show appreciation, be grateful.  Sounds like living 100:100, at 100% for 100 years…or more.
